I used to look around and wonder why my life felt so unfair.
Waiting on God is hard. Especially when you’re watching others receive what you’ve been praying for.

But slowly, I’ve come to see that what surrounds me — isn’t earned. It’s grace.

And it’s not that someone else has received those blessings cuz they’re doing something “right” or they deserve it. It’s grace.
No, I don’t have everything I want. But I have so much I never deserved.

My circumstances or wants doesn’t change who God is. He is still Sovereign.

And this verse — 2 Samuel 7:18 — now sits in the center of my home and my heart.
“Who am I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?”

Here’s the secret 🤫

I love working on these wooden signages! And I wanna bring each stroke I paint on every board to perfection! Yes, I don’t settle (which is really hard sometimes). But we all make mistakes, even me. And with white paint, it somehow ALWAYS seems to mess up on a darker background. As you can see I’ve messed up my “&” - which was my finger carelessly brushing against wet paint. There’s also the bleed that occurs when you’re using washi tape or masking tape to have your lines straight and spaced, no matter how well you think you’ve stuck them to your board. So what’s the solution to this?!

Over the years, I’ve experimented with sooo many different techniques and trust me, it got me a while to reach this place where my clients say every board looks printed 🤩. That’s what I wanna hear every time! It gives me so much joy! 😆 And today, I’m gonna tell you my secrets! 🙂‍↔️

First, let me take you through some of solutions I’ve previously used that have pretty good results.

Initially, when I made some minor mistakes (think a small bleed over the letters) I usually go over and thicken the strokes to make it look like that’s my design. I was good at it, and honestly with modern calligraphy, who can tell? It all comes down to your style and with limited rules, it was pretty easy to convince spectators. The downside to this? I would say bigger mistakes (like the “&”) because there is only a limit to which you can thicken the strokes. I still use this method a bit, especially when I’m working with modern calligraphy and if it’s not that big a mistake and it’s easy to cover up.

Later on, I went on to applying a finishing coat over the blank stained board, so that when I make a bigger mistake, I just use some water on a fresh paint brush and immediately paint over it. This gets the paint over the area loose and I wipe it off with a clean cloth or paper towel. Now this works only if your finishing coat is waterproof, else there’s going to be some whitish paint residue that your wooden board would have quickly absorbed by the time you go over it with water.

This is the actual speed at which I engrave. It takes time, consistent pressure and focus to engrave and with big projects like these, I’m sitting with it for hours.

I’m not complaining, I do it because I love doing it - this is my time when I’m the most calm and I’m not overthinking. This is my worship to God - to use the creativity and talent that He poured into me into creating something beautiful that brings a smile to someone’s face. ❤️
